the musical project and alias of singer-songwriter Lauren Elizabeth, a New Yorker who spent much of her twenties in France. She trained in musical theatre and classical voice studies during her childhood, but quickly grew tired of trying to fit her unique voice into someone else’s mold. Although she picked up a guitar and began writing original songs as a teenager, she didn’t begin performing live until her time at Kenyon College in Ohio.
As Folklaur, Lauren collaborates and records with her brother, Justin Scott, at his studio in New York City. Both are outspoken advocates for mental health awareness, an important topic that hits close to home for their family. In the spring of 2020, they lost their father to suicide, inspiring her new single, “At Sea”, in his memory.
Backed by Justin’s glimmering guitars and airy synths, Folklaur’s music explores themes related to distance and proximity, coming and going, rising and falling, love and loss. A believer of “radical softness” and a lover of language, her lyrics cycle and intertwine between songs with unabashed honesty.
Folklaur’s first single, “Comedown”, was released in December 2019. Her debut EP, “Flight”, will be released in January 2021.
